The Steenbras wellfield forms part of theCCT’s New Water Programme, which willenhance water security during droughtevents. The approach followed during theplanning and implementation phases wasguided by the philosophy that the protectionof the environment must be prioritised,while also protecting basic humanneeds. Therefore, although the Steenbrasarea is a declared nature reserve, the implementationof various measures enabledadaptive environmental management toreduce the impact of the developmenton the environment. For instance, thesemeasures included full-time monitoringby Environmental Control Officers onsite, Environmental Method Statementapproval processes, and continual inputby environmental and rehabilitation specialists. This assisted in the ongoingpursuit of environmental best practice.
