New York City Adds Constructed Wetland To Staten Island's Bluebelt System

IN THE LARGEST expansion to date of the innovative Bluebelt Program for managing stormwater in the borough of Staten Island, New York City recently completed construction of a new wetland. The more than 3 acre facility was needed to accommodate run-off from nearly 200 new catch basins and more than 3 mi of storm sewers installed within the Sweet Brook watershed on the southern end of Staten Island. The sewer improvements will facilitate better management of stormwater and reduce localized flooding, while the new wetland will hold and cleanse the runoff before releasing it. The $48-million project also included the replacement of 2.2 mi of existing water mains and the construction of 4 mi of new sanitary sewers that enabled nearly 600 residences to discontinue using septic systems and connect to the city's sewer system.
