River Restored

DEVASTATING FLOODS that struck northern Colorado in September 2013 killed nine people, caused billions of dollars in damage, and wreaked havoc in multiple watersheds along the state's Front Range region. In one of these, the Big Thompson River, southwest of Fort Collins, Colorado, the international engineering firm Stantec worked to restore two key reaches of the river, Cedar Cove and Jasper Lake, that are located within the area known as the Big Thompson Canyon. These efforts included channel grading, bank stabilization, the creation of a new, larger floodplain, revegetation with native plants, and other measures designed to make the river more resilient in the event of future flooding.
