Surveys of the road infrastructure provide important information for the Highways Agency and local authorities in maintaining and improving the road network. Decisions regarding repairs, changes to road layout and junction design are dependent on the collection of accurate data.rnDevelopments in technology have led to a shift from slow speed manual inspections for the collection of condition data, to traffic speed measurements undertaken by survey vehicles using laser and image collection systems. Hitherto the information provided by such surveys has concentrated on measuring the surface of the traffic lane being surveyed. The Highways Agency commissioned thernTransport Research Laboratory to undertake an initial study into possible enhancements to existing road survey techniques to expand the range of potential uses of survey data collected at traffic speed - one promising area of this research has been LiDAR technology.
