DESPITE headline-grabbing ambitious promises made by US President Trump in his 2016 election campaign, here we are, almost a year into his administration, with little achieved, except for an alleged 'simplification' of the tax system to strongly favour businesses and the well off.Indeed, the blustering storm he has succeeded in stirring up has fractured (some would say rendered impotent) his own Republican political party, albeit they enjoy majority control in both houses of Congress. Not surprisingly, President Trump's naive belief that all home and international affairs can be treated as if they were business negotiations is falling on stony ground in some camps. His unilateral withdrawal of the USA from the International Paris Climate Accord, on the basis that global warming does not exist, has been vociferously responded to by Mother Nature. The record 2017 Atlantic hurricane season has knocked a huge hole in the president's economic development budget by forcing diversion of substantial previously earmarked funds into damage reparations and relief. It should be stressed that the funds so far approved by Congress are woefully inadequate for the job of recovery.
