Session Description: We are witnessing a turbulent and volatile time for cities across the world. From food riots, to flooding, drought, civil unrest, strikes, urban warfare and energy shortages, what future holds for urban areas? Moreover, what kind of theoretical and practical work needs to be undertaken to understand and intervene in these crises to create more socially and ecologically just urban futures? One claim constantly revisited since the pioneering work of Henri Lefebvre in the 1960s is 'the right to the city'. The focus of the panel session builds upon this historic claim and examines the provocation 'Cities for People, not for Profit'.
