Beyond 'Cities for People, Not for Profit' Introduction

An early version of Cities for People, Not for Profit, edited by Neil Brenner, Peter Marcuse and Margit Mayer, appeared as a special issue of City (13.2-3). It has recently been published in expanded and updated form, subtitled 'Critical Urban Theory and the Right to the City'. From the early version on, it was undoubtedly a seminal collection and has been a major influence on editorial thinking in City. It has also provided a basis for dialogue with the editors of the original issue, and now with the updated and expanded version in book-form, that dialogue has become a project, 'Beyond Cities for People, Not for Profit'. This was introduced in a session at the 2012 AAG conference and some of that discussion will be taken up in future issues of City. Meanwhile we publish three reviews of the book here from colleagues new to the book and to the project.
