Cities are sites of immense complexity-of complicated material flows; of convoluted social and cultural relations and of intricate imaginings. It is precisely this complexity that Deborah Stevenson's book, The City, both interrogates and celebrates. Stevenson's engaging book aims to draw attention to the significance of cities and urban life, and the 'macro processes and systems, including the global movement of ideas, people, goods and practices (and their interconnections), as well as of the personal, the micro and the place-based' .
