IPC's High Road to China

There was a small but swift and passionate response from some in the Interconnect Manufacturing Services (IMS)/PCB industry when the news was announced that IPC had received a grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce to translate IPC standards and make them available in Chinese. "Aiding the enemy and abandoning the U.S. PCB industry" probably summarizes the comments. These few but zealous comments come as no surprise. The IMS industry is facing the worst downturn in its 60+ year history, so it's understandable that any effort by IPC to reach out globally would be met with intense scrutiny. But translating IPC standards and making them available to Chinese PCB manufacturers, electronics assembly companies and OEMs should be considered a victory for the U.S. electronics industry. Why?
