Several years ago the highest frequency encountered in digital circuits was below 20 MHz. Now, with data rates in enterprise applications moving up from 622 Mbps for the Gigabit Ethernet all the way up to 10 Gbps with OC-192 and up to 40 Gbps with OC-768 platforms and the edge rates below 50 Ps, the definition of high-speed digital transmission is changing rapidly. The processor speeds in high-end computers and servers are expected to go up to 20 GHz. Bus speeds are in the multigigabit range, and some are already running at 12.8 Gbps. Meanwhile, automotive electronics, collision avoidance systems, wireless local area networks, 3G base stations all operate in the gigahertz range of frequencies, and the laminate dielectric properties become important design factors.
