This paper describes the quantitative extraction of various plasticizers in poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) using a supercritical fluid. Extraction pressure, temperature, and contact time were varied in order to determine the optimum extraction conditions. The effects of CO2 flow rate and the volume of an ethyl acetate matrix modifier were examined. SFE optimum yield at 45 MPa, 120 °C and 120 minutes was compared to the value obtained via a conventional Soxhlet extraction method. Mass balance studies performed on the SFE process accounted for both recovered and loss extract. This approach provided a good indication of the efficiency of the extraction process.
