Unilateral approach to posterior retrocrural coeliac plexus block

Blockage of the coeliac plexus for relief of upper abdominal pain has a history of more than 80 years. The efficacy has been reported in numerous studies. However, positioning of the patient for this block may be associated with considerable discomfort and the technique is also associated with a number of recognised complications. In an attempt to improve the safety, patient tolerability, and technical simplicity of coeliac plexus blocks, we suggest a unilateral modification of the classical bilateral posterior retrocrural approach.
