Beneficial effects of vitrectomy for diabetic macular edema ( DME) have been demonstrated in a series of clinical trials. Vitreous surgery is useful in reducing the edema and improving visual acuity. Unfortunately, visual acuity measurements only provide information on one aspect of impaired visual function that accompanies DME. According to a report by Greenstein et al, visual function can be affected in the fovea, the macula, and the perimacular areas, and it is therefore important to be able to monitor changes in these regions after vitreous surgery. In this study, we used a multifocal electroretinogram ( ERG) technique to measure retinal function changes in the macular and the perimacular areas after vitrectomy, and prospectively evaluated the surgical outcomes of visual function.
