Study on the Toughening and Microstructure of MgO-PSZ Ceramics

The fracture toughness of MgO partially stabilized zirconia ( MgO-PSZ ) has been measured by the hardness indentation method. The influences of heat treatment on the fracture toughness K_(1c) of MgO-PSZ were studied. It was found that the fracture toughness of MgO-PSZ can be greatly changed by different heat treatment profile. The fracture toughness was improved by the heat treatment at 1100℃ after aging at 1400℃. There was the greatest K_(1c) value (11. 30MPa · m~(1/2)) of the samples aged at 1400℃ for 2 h followed by a subsequent anneal at 1100℃ for 10 h. The changes in the microstructure of MgO-PSZ ceramics aged with different thermal treatment were studied by use of transmission electron microscopy.
