Start-up of High-tech Companies: Experiences in the Chemical Industry

The Chemical Industry Federation of Finland recently commissioned a survey of mechanisms and practices related to starting up high-tech companies. The aim of the Federation was to launch, in a major national effort, a programme for establishing new businesses. The goal set for the programme was to establish new enterprises that would broaden the spectrum of chemical and new materials-based industries in Finland. Preliminary interviews were set up with representatives of research groups from universities, corporations, and research institutes. Projects that evolved from these interviews were selected using criteria agreed upon with the funding partners, Tekes (the National Technology Agency) and the Chemical Industry Federation. Development and business plans were created for the selected innovations. Several new companies have started up as a resu initiatives for the government to develop funding practices have evolved.
