Pienhiukkasiksi kutsutaan hiukkasia, joiden koko on alle 2,5 mikrometriä. Tällaiset hiukkaset on suurennettava tuhatkertaisiksi, jotta suurimmat niistä nähtäisiin paljaalla silmällä. Vaikka epidemiologiset väestötutkimukset osoittavat pienhiukkasten aiheuttavan terveyshaittoja, tällä hetkellä ei ole varmuutta siitä, minkälaisia terveysvaikutuksia milläkin pienhiukkasilla on.%The risk of paniculate matter for human health depends upon particle size, number and mass concentration. Typically, where one million particles of 0.03 μm size are found in one cubic metre of air, only one 10 um particle will be found in the same volume. Particle mass rather than particle size is preferred for estimates of exposure in ambient air. PM 2.5, and PM 10 are the measures applied for control purposes. Of these, the lower mass concentration of PM 2.5 is more indicative for alveolar deposition. In the case of reactions of fine particles with gas phase or surfaces, composition is relevant. Recent studies suggest that organic material comprises about 50% of the mass of fine particles. Diesel engines, fuel oil and wood produce substantial amounts of organic and inorganic carbon in combustion, and this particulate matter figures largely in present estimates of lung exposure. An average annual PM 10 concentration of 19 μg/m~3 was measured in a recent survey carried out in urban centres in Finland. A correlation with traffic density indicated that with an increase of 11,000 vehicles a day the PM 10 concentration increases by 10 μg/m~3.
