Assembly call: The 1D self-assembly of tube-forming NDI–lysine amphiphiles in water is described. Nanotubes formed from an acid or ester give nanotubes with small inner diameters of 4–5 nm, whereas the corresponding amide coils into nanotubes with diameters ranging from 100–200 nm (see TEM images). Spectroscopic measurements indicate the presence of highly ordered, homogeneous structures with significant π–π interactions.
