Fibrous mist traps are classed either as high-speed ones, in which there is mainly an inertial mechanism of droplet or particle deposition, or low-speed ones, in which the droplet trapping is mainly by diffusion. The characteristic gas speeds in the first type are over 1m/sec, whereas in the second they are less than 10cm/sec. A method of designing the latter has been given in detail in. It is best to calculate the trapping performance for a fast trap from the hydraulic resistance Δp_φ) (Pa) due to the motion of the gas through the filter. Experiments have given d_(50) = 1.044exp(-4.28·10~(-4)Δp_φ) where d_(50) is the diameter of the suspended particles (in μm) with density 1000kg/m~3 trapped with a performance of 0.5 sec. Formula (1) applies for speeds ≥1m/sec and can be used for fast traps if there is a log-normal particle size distribution by mass at the input to the filter, which is characteristic of a majority of mists.
