Radiographic nondestructive testing of pipeline welds is effective because it provides documentation, rapid working, independence from power supplies, mobility, and viability in field and constructional conditions under a wide range of circumstances. Radiography is provided by gamma-ray flaw detectors of universal type with sharp-focus gamma sources (selenium 75, indium 192, and cobalt 60). VNIITFA has collaborated with Energomontazh International and the NIIAR State Scientific Center in devising and producing the general industrial RID-Se4/R gamma-ray flaw detector with sharp-focus unique selenium 75 source. Its mobility, throughput, high radiographic sensitivity (1.5%), and working safety attract users. More than 300 RID-Se4/R gamma-ray flaw detectors are in use abroad and in Russia. Figure 1 gives an external view of the radiation head and transport-loading container. It uses sealed gamma-ray sources (selenium 75) with high specific activity (800-1200 Ci/g). VNIITFA has developed a mobile gamma-ray system called the RID-K/100 with a cobalt 60 source of activity up to 100 Ci for monitoring sealed components of wall thickness up to 200 mm.
