Global fiber production Polyester and polyamide expansion

In 2010, global production of chemical fibers increased by 5.9 million tons or 12 % to 53.8 million tons. The worldwide production of textile fibers increased by 8.5 million tons or 12% to 80.1 million tons (Table 1). In total, natural fiber production expanded to 26.3 million tons (+11 %). Within chemical fibers, 50.2 million tons (+12 %) were synthetic fibers (including PP film fibers/tapes and spunbonds) and 3.6 million tons (+14%) cellulosic fibers (excluding acetate cigarette filter tow). This led the way for global synthetic fiber production to increase by 5.4 million tons and cellulosic fibers by 450,000 tons. The production of lyocell staple fibers, however, with a worldwide capacity of 145,000 tons/year in 2010, is not covered by the cellulosic fiber statistic as over 95 % of production is covered by the Lenzing Group (trademark Tencel).
