Protein conjugation with biodegradable polyPEGMA and subsequent release is described. Covalently linking poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) to pharmaceutical proteins (PEGylation) imparts pharmacological advantages to native proteins such as improved solubility and stability, thereby extending circulation times and reducing administration frequency by minimizing proteolytic degradation. Thus the application of PEGylation has become widespread since pioneering research in the 1970s and as a result many effective PEGylated proteins have made a clinical impact.
