Multi-responsive amphiphilic gold nanopartieles (AuNPs) protected by graft poly(ether amine) have been prepared simply by a one-pot photochemical synthesis in the presence of thio-graft poly(ether amine) (gPEA-SH) and the mechanism was studied in detail. To endow the properties of response, amphiphilicity and biocompatibility to AuNPs, many efforts have been made on functionalizing AuNPs by tailoring the surface of AuNPs. AuNPs coated by a functional polymeric chain provides a versatile approach to functionalize AuNPs. Through surface-initiated polymerization (SIP), Fukada et al. introduced a strategy for the covalent attachment of a polymer chain. Li et al. prepared pH-responsive AuNPs by linking the PVP chain to the surface of AuNPs, and Zubarev et al. obtained amphiphilic AuNPs by attaching an amphililic block polymer to the surface of AuNPs through two steps.
