[70]Fullerene (C_(70)) was directly incorporated into the cell membrane using an exchange reaction from a C_(70)-γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CDx) complex within 10 min and the incorporated C_(70) acted as a photodynamic sensitiser for a cancer cell.rnPhotodynamic therapy (PDT) is an emerging treatment of tumour diseases that has received growing attention in the last few years. The treatment is based on administering the sensitiser, usually by intravenous injection and then, after a period necessary for retention of the sensitiser in the tumour, irradiating the tumour by visible light. In this way, singlet oxygen and other reactive species such as the hydroxyl radical are formed directly in a tumour and destroy it from the inside. Almost all sensitisers studied in this context belong to the group of porphyrinoid ligands or their metallocomplexes. Recently, we prepared lipid bilayer vesicles (liposomes) incorporating fullerenes (C_x; x = 60 and 70) as a photo-sensitising agent. This preparation method involves two steps: assembly of lipid bilayer vesicles that have target-directed lipid head groups, and transfer of fullerenes into the lipid bilayer of the vesicles by a dynamic molecular exchange reaction.
