The sequential, Grotthuss-type, proton-transport mechanism of water has been experimentally observed in the excited-state tautomerization of a 7-hydroxyquinoline molecule complexed cyclically with two water molecules in diethyl ether.rnThe anomalously high mobility of the hydrated proton in water has been of fundamental importance for a long time, providing inspiration for widely disparate theories. Since Grotthuss proposed the famous concept of fast proton transfer via structural diffusion along water chains, scientists have been trying to understand exactly how protons migrate in liquid water. Subsequent explanations have refined the concept by invoking thermal hopping, proton tunneling, or solvation effects.
