A short stereoselective formal total synthesis of (+-)-podophyllo-toxin has been carried out from a sulfoxide, using a one-pot tandem conjugate addition/aldol/electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction to form a tetralin, which was converted into picropodophyllin in two steps.
