The 2004 Nobel Prize for Physics has been awarded to David Gross, David Politzer and Frank Wilczek for their "discovery of asymptotic freedom in the theory of the strong nteraction". This honour comes a year after they received the High Energy and Particle Physics Prize of the European Physical Society - and just over 30 years since they made the remarkable proposal that the interaction strength between quarks becomes weaker as they come closer together.
