Implementation of the European Incineration Directive in the German cement industry

The use of wastes in cement works in Germany is subject to the Regulation on Incineration Plants for Wastes and Similar Combustible Substances (17th BImSchV). The "Directive 2000/76/EC on the incineration of waste", which came into force on 28.12.2000 after more than two years of discussions between the Council, Commission and Parliament, is a comparable regulation on a European level. The German law will have to be appropriately adjusted by 28.12.2002. Regulations for new plants will then come into force immediately, while transition regulations will apply to existing plants until 28.12.2005. As a whole, the new European Directive will tighten the environmental requirements for the use of wastes in cement works.
