As kilns get older, rollers and particularly their shafts inevitably reach the end of their useful fatigue life. Coupled with bends and cranks in the kiln shell this can be a fatal combination. Investigations on-site reveal that the likely cause for roller problems in some cases may have had much more to do with badly manufactured rollers than with variations on shaft bending caused by thermal cranks. This article shows an approach to determine the cause of unequal roller loads with portable equipment on-site and to recommend appropriate reactions.
