Steeple chase

GTE Mobilnet used the steeple of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church in Raleigh, North Carolina, to hide an antenna system. Although simple in concept, the project demanded extensive planning. In February 1996, GTE proposed a 25-year lease package to Hayes Barton in exchange for permission to construct a fiberglass replacement structure to house the antenna. GTE brought in KCI Technologies, which has experience in developing unique stealth sites. In selecting the Hayes Barton location, GTE avoided the costly and lengthy permitting requirements associated with new tower construction.
