Krajewski's work purports to present the history of the transition of the card catalog from Konrad Gessner's use of slips of paper to record bibliographic information about individual books (called here "Gessner's paper machine") to library catalogs around 1800 and finally to its use in bureaucratic offices in 1929 as a new paradigm in bookkeeping. However, his decision to frame the history as a form of early "electronic technology" is awkward and strained.
