The present invention relates to a method for the insulation of hot surfaces in paper/cardboard machines and to a use of a surface coating based on silicates and ceramic fibres for the insulation of hot surfaces in paper/cardboard machines and a drying cylinder in a paper/cardboard machine. An insulation coating composed of a mixture, which contains at least silicates, ceramic fibres, latex and binder, is applied to the surfaces to be insulated. The insulation coating is applied by spreading, spraying or rolling on to give a layer 0.5 - 4 mm thick. The drying cylinder comprises a space enclosed by a shell 10a, into which a heating medium is introduced, and end flanges 10b1, 10b2, to which shafts 10d1, 10d2 are connected.
