Theories of Map Design in the Digital Era

Map design has been regarded as the 'most fundamental, challenging and creative aspect of the cartographic process" by Delucia (1974). But it has been argued that map design "has been taken for granted, or treated superficially" in practice (Wood and Keller 1996a) and "has been overlooked or at least somewhat neglected in the transition to digital automation" (Wood and Keller 1996b).
