PRESSURE MOUNTS ON US-EU NEGOTIATORS AS OPEN-SKIES DEADLINE APPROACHES

After eleven rounds of negotiations spanning four years, the United States and the European Union finally signed Stage I of a two-stage open skies agreement in April 2007. In the first stage, which became effective March 2008, US passenger carriers received the access to London's Heathrow Airport they had long sought. In return, European carriers gained the right to launch nonstop trans-Atlantic service from European countries other than their own - Air France, for example, could now fly to the US from London.
