A YEAR OF CHANGE FOR DEUTSCHE POST WORLD NET

Deutsche Post World Net (DPWN, parent of DHL) reported a net loss of €1.69 billion in 2008, down from a profit of €1.38 billion in 2007, and an operating (EBIT) loss of €567 million down from an operating profit of €2.13 billion in 2007. This reversal came despite a 0.8% increase in revenue to €54.47 billion. However, the company pointed out that absent the effect of one-time charges (including the impact of restructuring its US express operation, and non-cash write-downs in its Supply Chain/CIS unit), underlying EBIT for the year was a positive €2.41 billion. Fourth-quarter revenue was down 4.4% y-o-y to €14.32 billion and there was a net operating loss of €2.64 billion, down from a4Q07 operating profit of €615 million. DPWN did not provide a net profit/loss figure for the quarter, but it was almost certainly negative.
