Carriers open their checkbooks: The launches of the 777F, 747-8F, and A330-200F all came within a relatively short time period, and were followed by an ordering frenzy that saw carriers and lessors place some 200 firm orders for these new production freighters. This frenzy stopped short with the onset of the worldwide recession in 2008, and for the following two-and-a-half years very few orders were placed. But after a year of recovery the pace is picking up again, particularly for the 777F. Below we discuss some of the more recent orders for that type as well as for the 747-8F and A330-200F, and on pages 10 and 11 we analyze the backlogs for both new-build and converted widebody freighters in more detail:
