Hapag-Lloyd Q1 loss widens

German container line Hapag-Lloyd registered a first-quarter net loss increased due to stiff competition and one-off costs from its takeover of the Chilean shipping company Compania Sud Americana de Vapores, according to a company statement. In the first quarter the company said its net loss grew to $163.9 million from $128 million in Q1 of 2013. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization fell to $3.9 million from $32 million in the prior year, the statement said.
