The structural development of carbons by heat-treatment at high temperature involves a thermally activated kinetic process which depends on both the temperature and the time of heat-treatment. Fischbach has shown that the graphitization kinetics can be represented by a superposition of first-order processes with a certain distribution of rate constants having an identical temperature dependence. According to the temperature-time superposition adopted in the phenomenological treatment of carbon structure development, the treatment time, t, at an arbitrary treatment temperature, T, is equivalent to the treatment time, t_o, at a reference temperature, T_o, and the temperature-time superposition is represented by the equation t_o= kt, where k is a constant depending only on temperature. A number of researchers have studied the applicability of the temperature-time superposition to the carbonization process, and their results were extensively reviewed by Fischbach.
