The EU Committee backs trading fix to help boost the EU ETS

The ETS has had a turbulent start to the year, with the price of carbon permits under the scheme plummeting to approximately €5, down from average prices of over €30 in previous years. In line with this, a key committee of the European Parliament has judged in favor of reforms that will allow a freeze in the auction of some pollution allowances in order to help boost green investment, known as 'backloading'. As the growing surplus of pollution allowances, due to initial oversupply and the economic slowdown, has been attributed to the fall of the carbon price, it is hoped that these reforms will be key in helping the EU ETS.
