Leather steering wheels may feel nicer to handle and give a more opulent impression than hard plastic, but they're not as resilient. The leather on some rims can start bobbling, or even peeling, with some being worse than others. One theory is that natural skin oils, dermatological creams, sunlight and even fuel residue can attack the leather's protective coating and discolour the dyes that are applied over the surface, with lighter hues tending to be more vulnerable.
