PRS for Music is writing to thousands of garages to make them aware of the need for a licence if they want to play music for the benefit of their staff or customers. PRS for Music is concerned that many garages are unaware of the need to have a music licence and are, therefore, understandably concerned when they receive a call or letter. Music Copyright Law in the UK protects the UK's 60,000 songwriters and composers ensuring that they receive revenues for their work. Just like being a professional mechanic, composing is a skilled profession, but unlike most garage employees, composers don't get paid a salary for their work. Instead they make their money each time their music is played and they are paid mostly in very small monetary sums over a long period of time; which is why it's essential that every business playing music has a licence. Around 3,000 garages already have a licence and are enjoying the benefits that this offers in terms of motivating staff and entertaining customers. However, many of the 40,000 garages without a licence still play music and are, therefore, breaking copyright law.
