Philips Automotive Lighting (Lumileds)

Thanks to developing and manufacturing such a diverse range of products, from electric shavers to dictaphones, Philips has become a difficult company to define. Yet, it remains uncommon knowledge that the Dutch firm took its first steps to become one of the largest electronics companies in the world, by manufacturing light filaments in 1891, prior to making its first car lightbulb in 1914. Philips has split the lighting division from its consumer lifestyle and healthcare interests and today employs more than 1200 people at its automotive lighting centre, Lumileds Germany GmbH, situated in Aachen, the country's most westerly-based city, close to Cologne.
