Getting The Grease In

I think my boat's stern gland greaser needs refilling because it will not turn anymore. It's a brass tube with a handle you turn on the top. I have been reading CB's website forum and it would seem that you can undo the tube to refill it. What sort of spanner would I need to do this? I have also read that you put it over the new tub of grease and turn the handle and it will refill. Is this the correct way and is it quite easy to do?
