A specialist recently overhauled my boat's BMC 1.5-litre engine, primarily because I wanted them to fit double belt pulleys because the alternator controller was eating belts every few weeks. This conversion has worked well. New flexible engine mountings were fitted because some of the old ones were broken.rnWhen we got the boat back there were terrible engine vibrations. We took it back after two days but by then it was quietening down.rnOur only problem now occurs just over idle speed when the whole shell seems to rattle and amplify the engine noise. There is no vibration with the engine revved up in neutral. When I decided to put another ring of packing in the stern gland, I found that there was not enough room at the bottom to get the packing in - it was as if the shaft was lying low. The output shaft is fitted with a Centaflex coupling. How do I check the alignment?
