Unions reject BW pay freeze

Trade unions representing more than 1,000 British Waterways staff have rejected the navigation authority's proposal to hold wages at the same level as last year.rnThe proposed freeze was unanimously turned down by the 85 percent of staff who voted in a ballot by unions Unison and Unite. In a joint statement the unions drew attention to the BW Chief Executive and eight directors receiving salaries and benefits totalling £1,428,000 plus bonuses adding up to a further £310,000. Mike Jeram ofrnUnison said "nought per cent is nothing more than a pay cut" when prices were still rising, and that staff "deserve recognition for their hard work and dedication".
