... And water in the engine

Q I have just bought a pretty much open boat with a BMC 1500 diesel. I knew the engine was a non-runner because the boat had been flooded with rain water to the level of the starter motor. It was reputed to be in very good condition until the flooding. I have removed the starter motor and have another, but have noticed water around the starter ring. What should I do before trying to start the engine?
