Stoppage to shut Severn

Diglis locks on the river severn are to shut for a month for major works, well before the start of the main winter stoppage programme. The two locks side-by-side are filled by a single large pipe running between the chambers. British waterways says that since this pipe needs to be sealed off to allow safe dewatering, it will not be possible to keep one lock open while the other is worked on. The timing of the stoppage from monday 12 september to friday 21 october, has been chosen to reduce the risks from autumn flooding and to avoid school half-term.
