Speak to some people, and you'd come away with the impression that surveyors practice some sort of dark art. There seems to be an air of mystery about what they do and how they do it. It's probably because you're most likely to come across a surveyor when you are buying or selling a boat - which can be pretty stressful time anyway. The survey assumes a great significance - after all, it could make or break the deal. What's more, it's likely that neither side will have much idea what the surveyor is looking for, or how the survey is going to be carried out, so it is not surprising that both the seller and the buyer are nervous, and look on the surveyor with an element of fear and trepidation.
