Sizzling dish to spare the fish

I was feeding the carp recently as they swam knowingly around the boat. Their antics were so absorbing while, like me, they basked in the afternoon sunshine, and greedily sucked in almost half a loaf of best quality seeded bread. A fellow boater mentioned that some of these majestic creatures are about 40 years old. I wondered how many times each one had been caught or whether they learned after that first foul experience of being dragged around on a hook not to be tempted by any unusual, colourful or wriggling morsel. Some had quite deep scars to their faces and bodies, plus signs of being caught.
