BW pays £1/2m for injury claim

British wayerwasy has paid £500,000 in compensation to a girl who had both legs amputated below the knee after an accident while playing on a swingbridge. BW has not accepted liability and does not believe it is at fault for the 2008 accident on the Ashton Canal, in which another youth swung the swingbridge shut while 15-year-old Jade Smethurst was sitting dangling her legs over the edge. However the decision was made to offer a payment rather than see the case go to court.
