Q On a recent trip we encountered a small problem in that when trying to operate a lock at Salterhebble we found we needed a 'hand spike'. We overcame the problem using a piece of wood we had collected as firewood. Now at home and in the process of making a proper hardwood 'hand spike', I am wondering if the part that fits into the lock ratchet mechanism for lifting the paddles has square corners or whether they are rounded.
